Pacquiao Can Put Marquez To The Sword And Move A Step Closer To A Fight With Mayweather
Manny Pacquiao and Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez will resume hostilities when they meet to decide the WBO Welterweight title at the MGM Grand. Las Vegas on the 13th November. The two have met twice previously with Pacquiao winning their most recent encounter which took place back in March 2008. He won that fight by a split points decision, earning the Filipino the WBC Super Featherweight crown. Their first fight took place four years previously and ended in a draw, despite the Mexican being dropped three times in the first round. On that occasion, the three knockdown rule was excluded from the fight conditions and it allowed Marquez the time to get back into the fight.
Despite the outcomes, 38 year old, Marquez has vociferously maintained that he won both of those two fights and is absolutely adamant that this time he will be the man who comes out on top. Since that defeat three years ago, Marquez has fought six times, losing only once and that came via a unanimous points decision in a non-title Welterweight fight against Floyd Mayweather, two years ago. His last fight in July this year ended with a first round knockout of Colombian Likar Ramos, which now gives him an impressive record of 59 fights, 54 wins (39 by KO), 5 defeats and a draw. Based on these stats, Marquez is clearly a match for any opponent and whilst his mouth won’t have helped his cause ahead of this fight he is sure to be a stern test for Pacquiao.
The 32 year old Pacquiao meanwhile has continued his ascent to the top of the boxing world, getting the better of anyone put in front of him whilst building up a very impressive career record of 58 fights, 53 wins (38 by KO), 2 defeats and 2 draws. He is an eight division world champion, the first to achieve such a feat and is rated as the best pound for pound boxer in the world.
Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach has been a little harsh with his charge in recent times, claiming that he is not being ruthless enough in his fights. Roach was particularly critical of Pacquiao after he showed obvious mercy to his opponents, Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley in his last two fights, which he won by a ‘street on the cards’ but he should have won them both by stoppage. Pacquiao has responded to his trainers call by announcing that no such mercy will be shown towards Marquez this time around and that he intends to put to the sword come 13th November and who would argue against that happening given the improvement seen from Pacquiao since these two last met.
Pacquiao also knows that the prize for the winner of this will be showdown with Mayweather, who the “Pacman” has been trying, with no avail, to get into the ring for some time and whilst it’s a rumour that has been hear time and again, news this week has suggested that talks about a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao could begin soon.
The Boxing odds ahead of the Pacquiao Marquez fight suggest that the outcome will only be going one way, which is a win for Pacquiao and he is the 1/8 strong odds on favourite, with Marquez an 11/2 chance. Another points win for Pacquiao is priced at 11/8 and 7/2 to win by KO. Whilst no odds are currently on offer about a Pacquiao Mayweather fight taking place in 2012, Boylesports are betting that should the fight take place then Mayweather would be 4/5 favourite over 11/10 shot, Pacquiao, illustrating just how close the fight that everyone wants to see is considered to be.
