Darchinyan/Mares being explored according to Shaw
BoxingScene are reporting that Gary Shaw is looking at matching Vic Darchinyan(35-2, 27KOs) with rising bantamweight star Abner Mares(20-0-1, 13KOs) before the end of the year.
It was thought that Darchinyan would face Nonito Donaire but after that fight failed to materialise Shaw is looking at putting together a fight with Mares.
Both were mentioned as potential participants in ShowTime’s bantamweight super six competition but with it looking unlikely the fighters have begun looking at facing each other beyond the confines of the competition with Top Rank’s Bob Arum hoping to have Nonito Donaire face unified champion Fernando Montiel possibly on a Cotto/Chavez Jr under card in December.
Mares won a lot of fans following his draw with IBF champion Jhonny Perez which many felt he did enough to win and a fight with the hard hitting Darchinyan would surely be a crowd pleaser.
The fight would be the third fight for both this year and for Darchinyan’s IBO bantamweight title
