Joe Calzaghe must be getting sick of answering this question but at Saturday’s WBC gala dinner at the ‘Night of Champions’ event he confirmed that he is indeed retired and has no reason to return to the ring.

Amidst jovial talk with those seeking pictures and autographs the undefeated two weight champion told fans he has no intentions of returning to the fight game as he has nothing to prove. It had been suggested that he could return for a rematch with Bernard Hopkins who some felt he was lucky to get the nod over when the two faced in 2008 but he has again dispelled that notion.

But he had some interesting words regarding his the current state of the super middleweight division he used to rule. Calzaghe agreed it is indeed a very deep and competitive division stating,

‘Nobody is head and shoulders above the rest and the division lacks a head figure like a prime Roy Jones. Everyone can beat everyone at 168 and that’s what makes it exciting.”

Calzaghe was much sought after at the event, it was to be expected being that it was held in Wales but despite all the adulation he still had one detractor, long time rival and former WBC champion Carl Froch.

The two were on stage at the same time collecting awards from the WBC and couldn’t resist having what seemed as friendly yet slightly heated words.
