Second post mortem requested for Sutherland

The body of Irish Olympic medalist Darren Sutherland is set to undergo a second post mortem at the request of his family.

Sutherland, who won the middleweight bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics, was found dead by promoter Frank Maloney in his London flat last September and at the time the London Metropolitan Police declared his death was not being treated as suspicious but the body is to be exhumed ahead of an inquest into his death later this year.

A statement from Sutherland’s family read:

“Whilst they are not at liberty to go into the specific reasons for their application given the pending coronial inquest into their late son’s death, they feel that the conduct of a second post-mortem into Darren’s death will only assist in putting all relevant matters before the coroner when the inquest into Darren’s death is reconvened later this year.

“They are firmly of the view that the only forum for determining the facts surrounding Darren’s death is through the judicial process and not otherwise.”

Following his Olympic success, Sutherland would go on to amass 4 pro victories at super middleweight, all by kayo, and was being touted as having a bright future in the sport.
