Mayweather beats Pacquiao…to ESPY best fighter of the year award
Whilst we await news of whether the proposed super fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will go ahead, Mayweather has scored a victory of another sort over his welterweight rival, beating him to the ESPY “Best fighter of the year” award.
Floyd, Manny and the UFC’s George St. Pierre went head to head for the award and Floyd triumphed following near shut out victories over both Juan Manuel Marquez and ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley in the past 12 months.
More interesting is the fact that the award is decided by fans, thus calling into question the statements that Manny is the more exciting and fan friendly fighter.
This will come as a source of pleasure to Floyd, having missed out on the BWAA (Boxing Writers Association of America) Fighter of the year and fighter of the decade award to Pacquiao.
This is Floyd’s second ESPY award having won previously in 2008 whilst Manny will have to wait to add to his 2009 ESPY award.
