Tyson unleashes the Fury on McDermott
If last years decision was dubious, then tonight Tyson Fury wasn’t going to allow any doubt to creep in as he stopped John McDermott in the 9th round.
Fury started the brighter of the two and highlighted his confidence in the first round with an ‘Ali shuffle’ although his lack of balance almost saw him dropped seconds later.
Using his jab he kept McDermott at bay and seemed comfortable for the first 4 rounds but McDermott soon found his rhythm and began to trouble his taller opponent, forcing his way inside and landing jarring right hands. Fury appeared to tire and a cut over his right eye in the 7th appeared to make matters worse.
Coming into the fight at his heaviest weight ever seemed not such a good idea as Fury struggled to breath continually popping his gum shield out to get air. He looked devoid of ideas and continually looked to his corner in confusion. His continual clinching saw him deducted a point and the Manchester born fighter appeared to be on his way to his first defeat.
But Fury wasn’t ready to hand over his 0 and began to rake McDermott with shots as the two traded. In what was a pretty even round the decider came at the death as Fury dropped McDermott with a short flurry of punches. It appeared fatigue rather than McDermott being hurt was the cause but at the start of the 9th round it was most certainly Fury’s power as a right hand sent him to canvas again.
McDermott again rose but another right hand sent him to the canvas for the final time as referee Dave Parris was forced to call off the bout when McDermott looked unsteady on his feet having beat the count.
Fury’s record now stands at 11(9) – 0 and becomes the mandatory for Derek Chisora’s British heavyweight title.
