Martinez will continue campaign at middleweight
Having been stripped of his WBO middleweight title, Sergio Martinez has finally decided he will continue to campaign at 160 pounds after vacating his WBC 154 pound title.
Martinez had held the belt since May last year but will now focus solely on the middleweight division. Under WBC rules a fighter is not allowed to hold titles in two different weight classes thus Martinez has dropped the strap.
This may come as a surprise to some as the junior middleweight division is a lot deeper than the middleweight and he will be leaving behind marquee names like Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto, Alfredo Angulo and Sergiy Dzinziruk.
Martinez’s hand speed and movement will put him at a massive advantage but there are a lack of big money fights in the division with only Sylvester, Sturm and Mundine as challengers. Any possible rematch with Paul Williams loks unlikely as Williams has expressed an interest to go back down to 147 pounds for big money fights there.
Martinez will now be in line to face his mandatory Sebatian Zbik who holds the interim WBC title.
