It hurts the sport of boxing when…

Yesterday as I sat in the hospital getting my bandages changed from the surgery I had on Saturday I listened to the ‘Boxing Truth‘ podcast.

I haven’t been listening for long but now I am I will be listening for as long as it’s made as the show more than lives up to it’s name, it speaks the truth. In what was an amusing show I found when they began to discuss the Timothy Bradley/Devon Alexander fight it struck a chord with me as I personally take the same stance.

Widely accepted as the two best 140 pounders around today Bradley and Alexander have been dancing around the idea of facing each other but both sides have managed to find alternate opponents despite exchanging words about how much they look forward to squaring off.

Alexander flirted with the idea of facing Zab Judah whilst Bradley was set to make his HBO debut against Luis Carlos Abregu before opting to take on Marcos Maidana who then pulled out with a back injury and instead may again face Abregu.

But whats with all the hold up?

On the show, one of the presenters went into a mini rant claiming the whole concept of building both fighters in order to make a potential fight more lucrative doesn’t always work and if care isn’t taken then these promoters could find themselves without a fight to make at all as in the pursuit of making a bigger name for themselves either fighter could pick up a loss. The same scenario is occurringbetween JuanMa Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa and frankly as dangerous as the featherweight division is for both fighters it is very much a possibility for those two.

In today’s climate it is unlikely that the Bradley/Alexander fight will grow into an Sugar Ray Leonard-Tommy Hearns affair in terms of size but if promoted right and an exciting fight takes place who is to say that a rematch and even a 3 rd match could make this whole series an exciting money earner for all those involved?

I would have Bradley as the favourite in boxing betting as would most bookies, but that is the exciting thing about this fighht, both are so good it could go either way so instead of trying to build it up into something it may not ever be, why not just give it to us now?

Is it too much to ask for to see the best fighting the best?

    Good point

140 division is quite competitive at the moment – either one could realistically lose in upcomming fights and blow it all. Zab would clean up this division if he could dedicate himself to 140
