Floyd: If it doesn’t make money, it doesn’t make sense

There have been a lot of reports about why Mayweather didn’t want to fight for Mosley’s belt.

Some reported that Mayweather  claimed that “Belts only collect dust”, which I have heard him say but I don’t think that’s the reason that he didn’t want his 6th major title.

Then some have quoted him saying “Belts don’t make me, I don’t need a belt” which I’ve also heard him say but I don’t think that’s the reason either.

And there’s reports that he didn’t want to pay a percentage of his purse, I think this is getting closer to the truth. There’s a report that it wasn’t a percentage but a $45,000 one time price. Regardless of whether the price was $45,000 or 3.8% of his $62,000,000 purse. I’m pretty sure Floyd Mayweather could afford it.

So after giving it a lot of thought I think I have a reasonable explanation as to why he didn’t want the belt.

Since the Carlos Baldomir fight, Money Mayweather has been looking to live up to that name, “Money”. He has only fought the biggest fights, against the top fighters, for the biggest paydays. So at this point he has no interest in “cleaning out the division” he just wants fighters, on the biggest stage, for the biggest purse.

When looking at it in this dimension, you’ll see that a belt would do nothing but mess up Mayweather’s quest for the best. If he had a belt, he could be mandated into fights most of which would be a very easy fights for Floyd but wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense financially and ultimately would be a waste of his time.

So without a belt he can pick who he wants to fight, without a governing body telling him otherwise and that makes sense.
