Home cooking? Sorry Carl you only have yourself to blame
The Super Six tournament was blown wide open last night when Mikkel Kessler beat Carl Froch.
Not only did the Dane take Froch’s ’0′ he also took his WBC belt thus potentially making his next fight with Allan Green a unification fight if Green can beat Ward in June.
Understandably Froch was annoyed to have lost and said if the fight had taken place in England the decision would have gone his way, well I have bad news for you Carl, it was a close fight but I, like a lot of people, think you lost too!
Of course Roger Tilleman’s score of 117-111 was a disgrace and there is no way in hell that the fight was that clear but Froch, who was well aware of the dangers he faced in fighting Kessler in Denmark, did himself no favours. He said himself he didn’t press when he had Kessler hurt and I think it was just endemic of his performance in general. He should have known that he would have had to go above and beyond the call of duty to win the fight in his opponent’s back yard but didn’t thus came off second best.
Yes Froch had his moments and yes he did land hard shots but at times it looked like he was fighting to keep Kessler at bay rather than to hurt him. Kessler kept him back peddling, firing a stiff jab at Froch’s head and body whilst in return Froch threw a weak jab to keep him at bay. If it didn’t look good to me then it can’t have looked good to the judges.
As I said it was close, I had Kessler winning the fight by virtue of winning the last round, but I just think Froch could have avoided the situation by doing more during the fight to make the the decision safe. I know at the moment he feels hard done by and has even threatened to quit the competition if his fight with Abraham is staged in Germany in order to avoid another bad decision but he can count himself fortunate to have got the decision against Andre Dirrell last year so these things balance out.
I like Froch a lot and would hate to see Froch walk out on the tournament just as it is heating up but I think he needs to take responsibility for his failings before he points the finger at anyone else
