Margarito set for ring return on May 8th
Former 3 time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito is set to make his in ring return on May 8th according to his promoter Bob Arum.
Margarito (37-6 27 KOs) will face Roberto Garcia (28-2 21 KOs) in Mexico having served a year long ban for being caught with an illegal plaster like substance in his hand wraps prior to his fight with Shane Mosley last January.
The fight will headline a special ‘Latin Fury’ card as it takes place during the Cinco De Mayo holiday season in Mexico and will be contested at junior middleweight although Margarito, who is chasing a bout with Manny Pacquiao, insists he can still make the welterweight limit of 147 pounds.
He is also being lined up to face the winner of the WBA junior middleweight title fight between Yuri Foreman and Miguel Cotto,
“He’ll fight at junior middleweight and then, depending on who he will fight in his next fight, he might get back down to welterweight. Margarito really wants to fight Manny Pacquiao and that would be at welterweight. If the Pacquiao fight isn’t there, he might face the winner of the [June 5] fight between Yuri Foreman and Miguel Cotto.”
Although Margarito will return his former trainer Javier Capetillo, who placed the illegal pads in his wraps, won’t as the fighter and his trainer have parted ways. Margarito is now trained by Robert Garcia, a former junior lightweight titleholder.
