Klitschko dominance should be applauded

When you think of the Klitschko brothers, despite the words boredom and mechanical springing to mind, the word that should pop into your head is dominance.

From 2006 and 2008 respectively Wlad and Vitali have really exerted pressure on an albeit weak heavyweight division. Holding the majority of the belts (the only available being David Haye’s WBA belt) the Ukrainian siblings have created somewhat of a monopoly.

To be recognised as anywhere near the best heavyweight in the division you have to go through either of the brothers but that is something easier said than done. Having taken a 4 year hiatus due to injury between 2004 and 2008, Vitali has not lost a fight since 2002 after the ref called an end to his bout with Lennox Lewis due to cuts whilst Wladimir last tasted defeat in 2004 to Lamon Brewster (although he avenged the loss 3 years later, making Brewster quit on his stool).

With a distinct height and reach advantage over most opponents both Klitschkos are methodical in how they break down an opponent working behind solid jabs to keep you at bay before detonating big right hands behind them. It is because of this that they are labelled boring etc but realistically if you have a winning formula why change it?

Vitali is slightly more open to taking a punch but when he wants to put you in you place he will, whilst Wlad is very much a safety first fighter having been knocked out in the past but he too is no slouch as Eddie Chambers found out on Saturday night when he was left unconscious following a sweeping left hook to his temple from Wlad.

David Haye has been anointed the man to shake the throne the brothers share atop of the heavyweight division but realistically he has a very hard task ahead of him and I suspect he himself knows this thus he opted to fight Nikolai Valuev instead of either last year.

Whilst Wlad has quite a few years ahead of him Vitali is reaching the end of his career so maybe then the monopoly can finally be broken but until Vitali retires, don’t expect their reign to end anytime soon.
