Former super middleweight and light heavyweight world champion Joe Calzaghe has ruled out a return to the ring.

Calzaghe’s name had been mentioned as a potential opponent for a number of fighters including WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch, light heavyweight star Chad Dawson and the winner of the ‘Super Six’ tournament but the undefeated Welshman has vetoed an notion of a return as it would ‘destroy everything I have done’.

Going through your whole career undefeated is quite an achievement and it is this that Calzaghe holds on to when considering a return to action,

“It’s a big difference between 47-0 and 46-1. If I did lose, I’d never forgive myself. Why would I want another fight? It’d mainly be for money – that’s the wrong reason.

“I tried to visualise, if I lost, how it would affect me? And it would really affect me. I remember my last loss, as an amateur, when I was about 17. It bugged me for months. I used to cry and I was really angry.”

Despite ruling out a ring return Calzaghe has also revealed he is done with the promotional business as it is a ‘pain’.
